FOOD BASICS
Which foods are best suited for camping? Here are a few basics that experienced campers always bring.

– Oil for cooking and salads
– Vinegar
– Spices and dried herbs
– Noodles
– Couscous (only needs water)
– Oatmeal (e.g. for porridge)
– Rice
– Tomato sauce
– Tomato paste
– Pesto
– Vegetable broth powder
– Spreads: sweet and savoury
– Cereal
– Mustard
– Onions
– Garlic
– Coffee and tea
– And water of course

Especially when travelling through areas where the water supply is not 100% safe, you should always carry enough water. In this case, it’s better to have too much than too little! Cooking, rinsing or washing consumes a lot of water. In addition to our 30 liter water tank, you can also pack a canister for longer trips and especially when there is no safe water supply. You can refill your bottle from the large canister for excursions. Make sure that the canister is food safe!
If you want to use water from rivers or lakes, you should boil it beforehand, as bacteria are no fun, especially when outdoors. Outdoor shops sell special tablets that clean the water of harmful bacteria. However, the water does not taste that good afterwards.

REFRIGERATION. YES OR NO?
Food is always a small challenge on camping trips. Sun, humidity and fluctuations in temperature can spoil food even before the expiry date. Animal products in particular, such as meat, fish and dairy products spoil quickly without refrigeration. These should always be refrigerated and consumed within a few days. Also make sure that the refrigeration is not interrupted or only shortly. It is advised to transport the food quickly from the supermarket to the fridge. Eggs are rather impractical when camping, unless you cook them at home beforehand. When cooked hard, eggs can be stored for a few days without refrigeration. What about fish? If you want to go fishing, you should be able to show your fishing license if a permit is necessary. If you don’t own a permit, you can quickly pay high fees.

Dried food or food that can be prepared by adding water does not require refrigeration and is therefore perfect for camping:
– Dried fruits
– Nuts
– Cereal and energy bars
– Dried tomatoes, mushrooms, etc.
– Instant soups
– Hard cheese
– Salami, beef jerky, etc.
– Canned food like beans, lentils, ravioli, etc.
– Crackers and biscuits

Fruit and vegetables usually do not need to be refrigerated either. When buying fruit and vegetables, make sure to avoid damaged fruit or vegetables or eat them up promptly.

SPECIAL FOODS
Bread: Bread can be kept uncut in a paper bag for a particularly long time. Wrap it in a kitchen towel and put it in another bag. This makes bread stay fresh for several days without getting soggy or staled.

Lettuce lasts longer if you wrap it in a damp kitchen towel or paper.

Smoked tofu as bread topping instead of perishable deli meats (you can buy these at dm or Alnatura, for example, which does not have to be cooled) then add a dash of mustard and the perfect sandwich is ready!

Dried soy protein is perfect for sauces and an imperishable substitute for fresh meat. The soy protein comes in a dried form and only needs hot water for preparation. It is available in coarse (e.g. for strips) or fine granules form (e.g. for Bolognese instead of quickly perishable minced meat).

STORAGE AND PROTECTION FROM ANIMALS
Especially mice and other rodents are a plague in some areas. Therefore, make sure that everything is stowed away safely and airtight. In many areas, you have to be aware of other animals like foxes or in northern countries even bears, which is why you should never store food outside (e.g. in a tent). Animals have an excellent sense of smell. It’s best to store food in your camper van or a few meters away in a tightly closed container. The safest option (especially in northern areas where bears are around) is to store the food in a backpack and hang it from a tree.
